Marilyn Monroe – Norma Jeane, The Catalina Island years.
1943 -44 . Marilyn Monroe lived with her first husband James Dougherty during the years This was long before Miss Monroe became a Hollywood icon and household name, back when she was just a girl who was known simply as Norma Jeane Baker. Norma married James in 1942 at the tender age of 16. The Merchant Marine Corps, where Jim Doughery was assigned, had its headquarters in Avalon. It was there that the young inductees used to train, climbing the cliffs and the peaks, yomping through the dense underbrush, in preparation for facing a more hostile environment on the other side of the Atlantic. Norma Jeane took their dog Muggsie () out for a walk, near the base-ball field (then become a golf ground). She visited the close aviary and strolled by horse at the Catalina Stables.

August 30, 2011 Riding the Catalina Express from Long Beach, California to Avalon on Santa Catalina Island is twenty two miles away and takes about an hour. Passing by the Queen Mary ship in the Long Beach harbor and seeing a school of dolphins are some of the sights on the journey. Catalina is a great little get-away and a fun town to visit.
