This is episode 1 of “A World in Time-Lapse,” a look at locations around the world using time-lapse photography. Time-lapse photography is a technique that allows a small amount of video to represent a long amount of time, allowing us to see time pass at a faster rate than normal. Each frame of this video is an HD photograph, taken by a camera, rather than a video camera. The photos are then combined in order to produce the video you see here, an HD 720p video. The location shown is in the city of Avalon, on Catalina Island, off the coast of California, USA. It was taken September 30, 2012. Tune in next Tuesday for the next episode.

FSX Catalina Island Day Spa Mission

Landing a Cessna Caravan on a carrier after an engine failure shortly after takeoff from Catalina Island. This is from the mission in FSX titled Catalina Day Spa. The beginning of the mission is ommitted; only the time from after the engine out is shown in this video. During an emergency, follow the ABC’s of emergency landings: A – Airspeed. Maintain the best glide airspeed appropriate for the weight and loading of the aircraft you are flying. In this video my airspeed was all over the place, and I was way to fast on landing. This resulted in me slamming the plane on the deck, just barely stopping in time. B – Best field. Find the best place to land. In real life I probably could have glided to shore, but FSX wants you to land on the carrier. This is a big no-no in reality….you’d be arrested. C – Checklist, or cockpit checks. In real life you would try to diagnose the reason for engine failure, attempt a restart, etc. If restarting is not an option, follow the emergency landing checklists and shut off fuel to the engines, unlatch doors prior to impact, seatbelts, etc. Do all this while still focusing on flying that airplane….that takes priority.

Flightgear – DHC-3 Otter landing at Catalina Island Airport KAVX

Catalina Airport is located on Catalina Island, just a few miles off the coast of Los Angeles. It was built by levelling off the top of a hill and the runway sits at an altitude of 1600 feet. According to WIkipedia: Terrain falls off steeply at both ends of the runway. Due to turbulence and downdrafts at the approach ends, lack of normal visual references on final approach, and the upslope of the first 1/3 of Runway 22 (which creates the illusion of being too high on final approach) the airport can be hazardous for inexperienced pilots. Aircraft at opposite ends of the runway cannot see each other. Here is a short clip of the real airport: youtu.be This video was made in Flightgear. Flightgear is free to download and use. www.flightgear.org
