Catalina Island’s “Scenic Route”
Exploring Santa Catalina Island’s “Scenic Route” which runs around the town of Avalon, on a gas-powered “jaguar” golf cart. The entire scenic route can be done in about 20 minutes, but is hard to do when everywhere you look is an awesome view. Filmed by Sheety33 with a Sony HX5V on Catalina Island, California. Thanks for watching!
Catalina Burger Run
Flying from KHHR to KAVX, Santa Catalina Island, 26 miles off the coast of California. This is my favorite flight and today I am flying right seat with Captain Ron acting as PIC, a long time friend and mentor. (I blame Ron for getting me off my rear and helping me go after my ticket) Ron and I have been making this burger run for almost the last 10 years now! Catalina is a very challenging destination. The airport sits on top of a mountain with steep cliffs and unpredictable winds all around. Because the runway is a bit narrow, people can tend to feel higher than they really are on approach. Watch your altimeter! Runway is 1602 ft, pattern 2600. Come in too low or shallow and a sudden down draft can slam you into the mountainside below the runway touchdown point. Its unfortunate but serious accidents happen every year here. The runway is crowned in the middle so its also common for people to land and feel the illusion that they are going to fall off the other side which results in braking far too hard too fast. Catalina airport has a very nice gift shop, a quality short order restaurant and makes for a fabulous lunch trip. Landing fee is 25.00, this is a private airstrip. You can buy an annual pass for 150.00 which gives you unlimited access and supports the Island’s conservation efforts. Buses run down to the town of Avalon (about 40 minutes away). There are wild Buffalo on the island and the cafe’s Buffalo Burgers are the main attraction! (Well, for Ron and I anyways …

Departing Catalina Island by Boat
This video shows what it’s like to depart Catalina Island, California. At first, the Catalina Island Express vessel heads outs slowly. And then, once at a safe enough distance from the harbor, it increases speed considerably. Notice the wake that the vessel leaves. The vessel is the Catalina Express, which was built in 1994 at a cost of $2 million US dollars. The ship can hold 150 passengers, has a monohull, and is powered by two MTU 12v4000M70 for a total of 4670 horsepower. The Catalina Express was built at Westport Shipyard, Grays Harbor, Washington, USA.
