A Day Trip to Catalina Istalnd 07-03-2011
Flew to Catalina Island from Long Beach airport, had lunch at the “Airport in the Sky”, took a shuttle van to Avalon, did some snorkeling and came up the mountain by shuttle back to KAVX. Beautiful day, and the water was pretty warm and clear. Although I spent so much time in it I could not stop shivering for an hour. This video is shot with iPhone 4 and GoPro Hero HD camera.
Takeoff Runway 22 Catalina Island KAVX California
Beautiful day, sister Harvest in town from Michigan.. I did what all good Southern California pilots do… Go fly to Catalina Island for lunch! Santa Catalina Island is 22 miles off the Los Angeles coast. Its a great flight over water to the Island. The airport KAVX is a lot of fun. The 3000 ft long runway sits 1602 feet above the ocean below. Cliffs on each end make the landing seem like landing on an aircraft carrier. Pilots be careful, there are crashes here every year. Make approaches steep to avoid down drafts slamming you into the mountain side. Be ready for a go around if things don’t go precisely as planned. Second issue to be aware of… the runway is crowned. Upon touchdown the runway will look short. Avoid heavy braking. As you approach the crown you will see that there is plenty left to go! Runway 22 is the normal landing and takeoff runway when there is a west to east (normal) airflow. In LA its called an “onshore flow”. When there is an offshore flow Runway 4 is in use.
